After memorable years living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I enjoyed mentoring young Native-American art students and conducting workshops at the Institute of American Indian Arts, my home and studio are now in the green mountains of western North Carolina. Quite a change of scenery!
Coming along with me on this cross-county relocation were my husband, our Subaru, and my archive of collaging raw materials.
I have always loved the visual surprises possible with assemblages and collages. In my current work, I am juxtaposing paper-based imagery — my photographs and mono prints, vintage papers and prints, found photos, documents and other American culture ephemera, along with digital pigment prints, designs and textures. I bring separate parts together aiming to turn tabletop chaos into a unified whole. Rhyme if not reason, you might say.
Usually, I start with a concept in mind but the process is always fluid, guided by “feel”. I never know exactly where I am going but am always amazed at how disparate images, colors and words can come together in unexpected ways.
Here’s my abbreviated bio: I was born in Tokyo, earned degrees in philosophy (BS) and later in fine art (MFA). I was a college art teacher in Florida for 10 years before becoming a studio artist. I have been fortunate to show my work in museum and gallery exhibits throughout the country.
